Rohan Best to Debut

On Saturday 10th March, Rohan Best will make his long awaited debut as a central referee in the NSW Rugby League's District Representative competitions.

Rohan will referee the Harold Matthews match between SWSAS and Balmain at Leichhardt Oval. We offer Rohan our congratulations and wish him well in this promotion.

Pre-Season Launch

All active members, Appointments Board, Advisory Panel, CMO’s, BOM etc are encouraged to attend the Associations Pre-Season launch.

Tuesday 6^th March
6:15 to 7:15 for members under 18 and other Level One Referees.
6:50 to 8:00 for Level Two Referees and above.

If you are unable to attend the session allocated to your group, you are still encouraged to attend when you are able.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE – your assistance in setting up the room and feeding the members will be greatly appreciated. Please contact Grant (socialsecretary@penrithreferees.com.au) to let him know when you’ll be able to get there so we can roster people to the various jobs that need to get done.

The Association will be using a new gear supplier this year, so we would like to size up all our members to ensure that your new issue of gear will be the best possible fit. It’s also a great chance for us all to get together over a sausage sandwich before the busy football season begins. There is some important rules information to be presented and membership forms to be returned.

Membership Forms: Will be distributed over the weekend. Please return these on Tuesday. You will also need:

Doctors certificate stating that you are healthy enough to referee;
Two passport sized photos (not needed if you submitted them last season)

ARL Development, Jamison High School and Penrith Referees Recruitment

ARL Development, Jamison High School and Penrith Referees Association joined forces to recruit 19 new referees for the upcoming Junior League season.

Mark Bohan and Kasey Badger from ARLD Penrith and ARLD Western Sydney organised the course specifically for students who wish to become referees in the Penrith District. Such was the response that the course was closed off at 19 candidates, with many more being encouraged to attend the upcoming course in March, or participate in the online learning components.

Kasey and Mark, along with NRL Referees Gavin Badger and Jason Robinson, were highly impressed with the enthusiasm shown by these budding referees. The candidates will complete the online learning and face-to-face components and be ready to officiate in the Junior League trials.

Referees Course

Interested in becoming a referee? The first weekend course has been scheduled for 31st March and 1st April.

Prefer to do the course online? Part of the referees course can be completed online, although there will be a face-to-face portion to be completed.

2012 Relay for Life

Penrith Referees will again be supporting the NSW Cancer Council Relay for Life to raise funds for, and awareness of, the important work done by the Cancer Council.

2011 saw Association members first participate in this 24 hour event, and raised several thousand dollars for the Cancer Council through individual and team sponsorship and conducting raffles over the weekend. Over the 24 hour period, Penrith Referees always had at least one member on the track at all times.

Many members ran and walked for hours on end in memory and recognition of loved ones, making this a truly poignant event.

Relay For Life is an overnight, community event where teams of 10-15 participate in a relay-style walk or run to raise funds for Cancer Council. The event brings the whole community together for a night of fun, entertainment, celebration and remembrance. Details for the event are:

Two Penrith Referees Added to NSWRL District Reps

Stephen Bourke and Adam O'Keeffe have been added to NSWRL Inter-District Development Squad for 2012, increasing the Penrith contingent to eight in the elite of District Representative officials.

Tim Hannon and Michael Signoretti started the season refereeing Harold Matthew Cup with Mark Bohan kicking-off in SG Ball. Ryan Thomas, Rohan Best and Luke Burton were appointed to touch-judge SG Ball with newcomers Bourke and O'Keeffe running Harold Mattews lines.

Congratulations to all, and fitting rewards for the work each referee has put in over the last twelve months, and particularly the off-season. We wish them all the best.

Penrith All Stars

Three Penrith-grown officials were slecected to officiate in the seasons first representative fixture, the NRL v Indigenous All Stars match on Saturday 4th February 2012. Rickey McFarlane, Phil Haines and Jason Robinson were thrilled to be selected to take part in such an important rugby league and cultural event.

The first "Big Game" of the season was played in front of 26,500 at Skilled Stadium on the Gold Coast, and is the first domestic representative appointment for both Phil and Jason, with Rickey adding to his rep honurs having previously officiated the City versus Country match.

Phil and Rickey had the added honour of starting the game (Phil refereeing the first half with Ashley Klein, Rickey touch-judging the entire game with Adam Reid) with Jason and Gerard Sutton taking over the refereeing duties for the second half.
